His mother was a teacher and school principal. After several years of study at the University of Virginia, Sanders entered the Law Department of Harvard University in 1877 and graduated in 1881. He passed the New York state bar exam and became a lawyer.

In 1884 he left his law practice to become a teacher and principal at various schools, including Columbia Grammar School, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (now Polytechnic Institute), and the High School of Commerce (now Washington Irving High School).
